If a door is crooked, damaged, stuck partway open or has a broken spring or cable, stop using it and keep people and pets clear. Don’t try to force it or adjust the hardware.
The blizzard Winnipeg remembers
From November 7 to 9, 1986, a major blizzard swept across southern Manitoba. Government weather records report more than 35 centimetres of snowfall in Winnipeg, with strong winds and poor visibility. The storm remains a useful reminder of how quickly prairie winter can change an ordinary weekend.

After the snow: clear the doorway first
Before operating a garage door after a snowfall, check the outside threshold from a safe position. Remove loose snow and ice that could obstruct the door’s path, and make sure the area is clear of people, pets and objects. Avoid striking the bottom seal, panels or tracks with a shovel.
If your opener uses photo-eye sensors near the floor, check that snow or debris is not blocking their view. Follow your opener manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning; don’t bypass safety sensors.
What if the door seems frozen shut?
Stop if the door does not move normally. Repeatedly pressing the opener or forcing a door can damage components or make an existing problem worse. Ice at the threshold is one possible cause, but a broken spring, cable or another fault can look similar.
From a safe distance, look for visible ice, a crooked door or loose hardware. Don’t work on springs, cables or bottom brackets. If you’re uncertain, or the door appears damaged or unstable, leave it in place and contact a professional.
Weather stripping and insulation
Bottom seals and perimeter weather stripping help close gaps around the door. Over time they can wear, crack or stop fitting well. A visual check from the ground can reveal obvious damage or daylight around the edges; a professional can assess the fit and recommend suitable replacements.
If you’re considering a replacement door, insulation is one part of the decision. The door’s construction, fit and seals matter too. Learn more about insulated garage doors or ask about maintenance for your existing system.
When to get a second set of eyes
A new grinding sound, uneven movement, a cable hanging loose or a door that stops unexpectedly are good reasons to stop using the system and arrange an assessment. If you suspect a broken spring, read our broken-spring safety guide.
